Is there a standard breakdown of business Cost, Revenue, Sales, Marketing, etc…?
I’m trying to establish a cost of my product and still make a profit. Is there a certain recommended business % breakdown to establish how much some things may cost? For example, maybe the following breakdown.
XX% being percentage of revenue
Cost to manufacture = XX%
Overhead = XX%
Sales and marketing = XX%
Operation Costs = XX%
Profit = XX%
Obviously there are variables for all companies, but is there a rough standard?
My business is a new start up designing and producing indoor golf nets.
This is a cost accounting questions and although that may sound like a boring topic, anybody running a business must deal with this topic. Here are the main points Sales – Cost of Goods Sold – Operating Expenses – Income Taxes = Profit. Pretty much what you had above so you have a good sense of the components. The thing is that the Cost of Goods Sold and other costs have what is known a a fixed and variable component. The fixed component is the cost incurred just to open the factory (i.e. the rent) and will exist even if no goods are manufactured. The variable component will go up a you manufacture more goods (i.g. the raw materials). The % of fixed and variable and the other % swill vary depending on the business. The % are usually know within similar types of businesses and this is know as a benchmark. The benchmarks for various industries can be determined by researching financial statements of companies with an in dusty and reading trade journals. If you get good at it you may find an undervalued business to buy,
