Biodegradable Golf Tees
The Sustainable, Biodegradable, Compostable Packaging Trends
As we are modernized by technologies, the packaging supplies industry innovated with the time to answer and supply the demands of the marketplace. It has evolved into a more sophisticated technology yet remains on its sole purpose: to better influence our lives while protecting the environment, hence focusing on using eco-friendly materials.
Renewable! Recyclable! Compostable!
Here are three of the many examples of sustainable materials used for packaging*:
Corrugated paperboard: Otherwise known as the good old cardboard. Yes, those simple brown boxes that we use to store, ship and move everyday items are made from the single most recycled packaging material on the planet. Manufacturers and retailers turn to corrugated because it’s durable, versatile and reliable, with an ideal surface for bold marketing visuals. Consumers trust corrugated because it’s strong and familiar, and they know it’s easily recyclable and reusable.
Recycled PET: Polyethylene terephtalate, or PET, is a type of plastic best known for its use in water bottles. Recycling and reprocessing PET into new materials helps reduce plastic waste while still retaining the familiar look, feel and durability of virgin plastic. ConAgra Foods recently reduced its use of virgin plastic by 8 million pounds per year, simply by making the switch to recycled PET for its Healthy Choice and Marie Callender’s frozen meal trays.
Bioplastics: The word may sound iffy, like something out of a sci-fi movie, but bioplastics are the real deal and are getting more real by the minute. Just look at the two cola giants, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, as they battle it out for the most sustainable beverage bottle (Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle is made from 30% plant-based material, and PepsiCo just introduced its bottle made from 100% agricultural waste). Bioplastics work to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by shifting away from oil-based plastics and producing materials from renewable sources, such as plants and starches. Many of these materials are easily biodegradable or compostable, so consumers can put them back into the earth for safe disposal.
These sustainable materials are helping pave the way toward a healthier future. We may be living in a material world, but that certainly doesn’t mean the materials have to take over our world.
Furthermore, an international organization – Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) – stamped a list of definitions on what a “sustainable packaging” is. It serves as a common vision and framework for understanding activities, directed toward improving packaging, and continues to inform the future vision of the coalition and its individual member-companies. This definition has been widely adopted throughout the packaging industry, according to SPC.
A sustainable packaging and trends for the future must adhere to the following criteria:
- Must manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices;
- Must be effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial closed loop cycles.
- Must meet market criteria for both performance and cost;
- Must be physically designed to optimize materials and energy;
- Must be made from materials healthy in all probable end of life scenarios;
- Must be sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy;
- Must be optimized using renewable or recycled source materials;
- Must be beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle;
As these trends continue to become more prevalent among everyday products, we are making bigger strides on the road to a cleaner, healthier future. Two and a half billion by 2020? We’re well on the way.
