Welcome

Golfing is as familiar to me as the blue skies and the green lawns of the south. And I must confess that golf has been my lifelong friend. It must be because I grew up around golfers, my daddy and almost all my other relatives also played the game. My daddy and uncles were all members at the local golf club.

Sometimes, when I was lucky, I would caddie for them on the weekends at the course. We always made a day of it because the golf club had a pool too, and tennis courts. In the early morning mist and for the first nine holes I would be the caddie and when we would arrive at the tenth hole, my daddy would ask me if I wanted to tee one up and give it a try. That was always the highlight of the day.

Of course I jumped at the opportunity to give it a go. I always used the three wood. I loved the way it felt in my hand. There was defiitely something about the weight, length, and look of it which gave me the comfortable and nice feeling. I remember daddy saying that concentration was very important because I only got one shot at it per hole on the back nine.
So that is one of my fonest memories, and also how I learned to hit long tee shots. And would you believe that I started when I was the same height as a three wood? Yup, those were the days.

We played at this course until it became too overcrowded and busy with too many new members. Some farmers subdivided their lands and soon big time developers came in and created whole new neighborhoods, all around the club. My family remained members there for just another few years. In the following years it seemed even the owners got fed up with all of the growth and eventually, even they decided to sell lots on the course for houses, which brought in paved roads and many changes to our old neighborhood which held so many fond memories.

When I was old enough to drive, I started looking for another course to play, and I found what I consider to be my first choice in my group of courses to play.

My course is a great place to play, but it is a bit on the shorter side but with all of the challenges of a bigger and longer course because of the tight fairways, fast greens, water, bunkers, and trees.

The first hole is a handicap 3 with O.B on the right. The fairway starts off flat, then goes uphill to a crest about two hundred yards out, then it starts to go downhill with a bend to the right, downhill towards the green. Beautiful and so right for my style. It has a nice variety of holes. The number 2 can be as good as it gets if you drive over the corner of the dog-leg right, only 320 yards to the green on a great par 4. I have played this course so many times I can visualize every hole, yet every time I play here, the course has a different feel. I have been playing at this course now for twenty years and still enjoy it every time — there is nowhere else like it.

Every golfer I have brought to this course always falls in love with it because it is so special. Just like most other golf courses, when one pars or birdies the first hole, the rest of the round can go quite well. On the other hand, it can be a grind all day if you start bad; but just remember, you are lucky to be enjoying what you love to do. In the end we should all enjoy it regardless. That’s what my daddy used to say. I suppose what I love most about this course is that it’s the last one we played together, and so his memory lives here for me, and that is enough to make a perfect day.

I am not sure how many golfers like golfing alone, but I do. Perhaps it’s because I always feel the presence of my daddy when I do. So when I am asked if I truly enjoy golfing alone, I answer that I have always enjoyed the opportunity to do so. I have gone out and played great golf alone for the pure pleasure of total concentration. I enjoy watching the ball soar off on line towards the middle of the green, and watch it as it rolls out a few yards from the hole. You feel a unique sensation in the lungs and heart. Oh what great joy golf is and how I am at peace when I play.

This wonderful game has taught me discipline, patience, how to set goals and plan out strategies. It has connected me to people and places I imagine I would not have had I not took the time to pause on the course. And finally, it keeps an aging old timer in shape, just like daddy was.

I hope you enjoy this site as much as you enjoy the game.
